Hakeem pulls out a trick to bag billiards title

Member of Parliament, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and Moors Sports Club member Rauf Hakeem clinched the Colombo District billiards title when he defeated his club mate A.H. Manoorjan in a close tussle in the final of the Colombo District Billiards Championship played at the Billiards and Snooker Association billiards table in Reid Avenue yesterday.
Hakeem who is participating in the Colombo district billiards tournament for the first time was in fine form as he kept his confidence and used his experience of his early round robin victories to overcome Manoorjan in a closely fought contest by 176 points to 153 in the one hour timing contest.
The Colombo district tournament is held along with tournaments in Kandy and Galle districts, in preparation for the forthcoming billiards nationals. After the completion of the district tournaments the Billiards and Snooker Association will conduct the All Island Lanka Plate which is scheduled to be played from July 22 to 25.
The All Lanka Plate will be contested by 38 cueists comprising 16 from Colombo district, eight each from Kandy and Galle along with the six players relegated cueists from the national championship of last year.
The billiards nationals are due to get underway from July 29 onwards with the final slotted to be played on August 6.

Quarter Finals – Rauf Hakeem (MSC) beat K.W.A. Ratnasiri (YMBA) (158/104). N.M. Shamil (RSS) beat O.Sirajudeen (YMBA) (194/178). A.N. Manoorjan (MSC) beat A.N. Mohamed (AAC) (190/101). Pawan Santani (OAC) beat W.M. Naushad (The Cue) (203/137).
Semi Finals – Rauf Hakeem (MSC) beat N.M. Shamil (RSS) (153/129). A.H. Manoorjan (MSC) beat Pawan Santani (OAC) (198/156).
Final – Rauf Hakeem (MSC) beat A.H. Manoorjan (MSC) (176/153).
Third place play off – Pawan Santani (OAC) beat N.M. Shamil (RSS) (84/10).
